B/w, 3½x5½. Captioned in lower margin. William Thomson, Lord Kelvin of Largs (1824-1907) was a mathematical physicist and engineer who taught at the University of Glasgow for over half a century, refusing many offers from other universities. He recognized that there is a lower limit to temperature, absolute zero; absolute temperatures are expressed in units of kelvin, in his honor. As an engineer he made important contributions to submarine telegraphic cable technology. He was wrong about some things, as in his calculation of the age of the Earth and in his dismissal (in 1902) of the possibility of heavier than air flight. But he made important contributions to theoretical physics, symbolized by his burial in Westminster Abbey next to Isaac Newton. Thomson was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1892, becoming the first UK scientist to enter the House of Lords. Lightly toned. Corners worn and creased. Signature light but legible. Ink stamp on verso.
